Expresiones idiomáticas comunes en inglés

Conocer expresiones idiomáticas y utilizarlas bien, demuestras que conoces bien un idioma. Veamos algunas de estas expresiones y en qué contexto utilizarlas.

1. The best of both worlds’– Lo mejor de las dos opciones. Ejemplo: “By working part-time and looking after her kids two days a week she managed to get the best of both worlds.” (Al trabajar media jornada y cuidar a los niños 2 veces por semana, ella ha conseguido lo mejor de ambos mundos)
2. ‘Speak of the devil’– Cuando hablas de una persona que justo aparece en ese momento. Ejemplo: “Hi, Tom, speak of the devil, I was just telling Sara about your new car.” (¡Hola Tom! Hablando del rey de Roma, le estaba contando a Sara sobre tu coche nuevo.)
3. ‘See eye to eye’– estar de acuerdo con alguien. Ejemplo: “They finally saw eye to eye on the business deal.” (Ellos finalmente han llegado a un acuerdo para el negocio.)
4. ‘Once in a blue moon’– No sucede muy a menudo. Ejemplo: “I only go to the cinema once in a blue moon.” (Voy al cine de Pascuas a Ramos)
5. ‘When pigs fly’– Quieres decir que algo nunca pasara. Ejemplo: “ When pigs fly she’ll tidy up her room.” (Ella ordenará su habitación cuando las ranas críen pel.)
6. ‘To cost an arm and a leg’– Una cosa que cuesta mucho dinero. Ejemplo: “Fuel these days costs an arm and a leg.” (El precio de la gasolina últimamente cuesta un riñón.)
7. ‘A piece of cake’– Cuando algo es muy sencillo. Ejemplo: “The English test was a piece of cake.” (El test de inglés ha sido muy fácil.)
8. ‘Let the cat out of the bag’– revelar un secreto accidentalmente. Ejemplo: “I let the cat out of the bag about their wedding plans.” (He dejado escapar sus planes de boda.)
9. ‘To feel under the weather’– sentirse mal. Ejemplo: “I’m really feeling under the weather today; I have a terrible cold.” (Me siento fatal hoy, tengo un resfriado muy fuerte.)
10. ‘To kill two birds with one stone’– Cuando solucionas varias cosas a la vez. Ejemplo: “By taking my dad on holiday, I killed two birds with one stone. I got to go away but also spend time with him.” (Al coger las vacaciones con mi padre maté dos pájaros de un tiro: viajé y pasé tiempo con él.)
11. ‘To cut corners’– hacer algo mal, de cualquier manera. Ejemplo: “They really cut corners when they built this bathroom; the shower is leaking.” (Ellos han hecho una chapuza al construir el baño, la ducha está goteando.)
12. ‘To add insult to injury’– empeorar algo. Ejemplo: “To add insult to injury, the car drove off without stopping after knocking me off my bike.” (Para el colmo, el coche siguió después de tirar la bicicleta al suelo.)
13. ‘You can’t judge a book by its cover’– no se puede juzgar por la apariencia. Ejemplo: “I thought this no-brand bread would be horrible; turns out you can’t judge a book by its cover.” (Pensé que este pan sin marca sería malo y resulta que las apariencias engañan.)
14. ‘Break a leg’– es una expresión utilizada para desear suerte, en especial a los actores. Ejemplo: “Break a leg, Sam, I’m sure your performance will be great.” (Suerte, Sam, estoy seguro que tu presentación será excelente.)
15. ‘To hit the nail on the head’– describir con precisión lo que ha causado un problema. Ejemplo: “He hit the nail on the head when he said this company needs more HR support.” (Él le ha dado en el clavo cuando ha dicho que la empresa necesita más soporte de RRHH.)
