Starting and ending a conversation

Tanto para iniciar como para finalizar una conversación se pueden aprender unas fórmulas muy útiles, aquí dejamos unas cuantas:

  • Use expressions to start a conversation: Hi there - How’s it going? – what’s up – how are you doing? – Hey! Long-time no see.
  •  To try to end a conversation: I guess I’d better be going – Right, I must dash – It was nice talking with you. Right! I am off! It was lovely to see you. I should get going, I suppose – It’s been great to talk with you.
  •  To say goodbye: See you around – Have a nice weekend – Talk to you later – take care – Bye!

Otra buena estrategia inicial a la hora de preparar el speaking esta relacionada con las "Follow up" questions.

Maintaining a conversation

·         A: Where were you before you move here?
·         B: At the regent palace, in London
·         A: That’s a big place, isn’t it?

Think of at least two possible follow up questions for each statement below

a) I went to the cinema
b) I work in New York
c) My computer doesn’t work
d) I bought a jumper yesterday
e) I am going to start a cooking course soon

Class activity

1. imagine you and your partner were on holiday last week. Write five statements about what you did on your holiday
2. find a new partner and take turns to talk about your holiday. How many follow-up questions can your partner ask about each statement?

TOPIC: Are you good at...?

  • Are you good at climbing trees?
  • Are you good at singing?
  • Are you good at speaking English?
  • Are you good at computer games?
  • Are you good at playing the piano?
  • Are you good at playing basketball?
